Indiana School Makes National News For Turning Unused Food Into Take-Home Meals

This is probably one of the best things I’ve read all week. Woodland Elementary in Elkhart started a pilot program last week where unused food was re-purposed into take home meals.

20 kids were sent home with backpacks containing eight prepackaged meals on Friday to last through the weekend.

“We had to start a little small because we weren’t sure if we would have enough food,” the supervisor of student services for Elkhart Community Schools told CNN. “The kids were thrilled, staff were crying, kids were so excited.”

The school partnered with Cultivate, a group that gets unused food from local caterers, hospitals, casinos, sports teams and more. Their partnership with just one major caterer has already saved 25 tons of food in seven months.
